Beware of GoFundMe
This week, I warned Floridians about the pitfalls of crowdfunding websites like “GoFundMe” being used to host online charity scams related to the Ukrainian War. With nearly 1,400 Ukraine relief fundraisers currently on GoFundMe alone, consumers should beware before giving. A lot of good people around the world want to donate to Ukraine relief efforts, which creates an opportunity for cyber thieves. Tragedy brings out the best in some and the worst in others. Consumers must be on the lookout for ‘GoFundMe’ style crowdfunding charity sites that anyone can easily setup a fake fundraiser for any cause. Always do your research and only give to reputable charity groups and crowdfunding campaigns that you have verified.
Earlier this week, Governor DeSantis signed Senate Bill 1054, Financial Literacy, which requires Florida high school students earn at least one-half credit of instruction in financial literacy or money management. In the future, Florida schools will now be required to teach students about the basics of credit, budgeting, savings, and investing. It’s critical we set Florida students up for financial success and this legislation will ensure vital financial literacy resources are available to Florida students before graduation. Thank you to Senator Hutson and Representative Busatta Cabrera for their hard work on getting this legislation passed and setting students up for success in and out of the classroom.
Lastly, I’m proud to honor the Greek heritage of Floridians, like myself, by recognizing Greece’s Independence Day. Florida has deep ties to the Greek community including, Tarpon Springs, a city in Pinellas County with the highest percentage of Greek Americans of any city in the United States. It is important acknowledge the significant role that Greece played on the global stage and their strong relationship with the United States.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
