MIAMI, Fla. — CFO and State Fire Marshal Jeff Atwater honored the winners of the Florida Fire Service Awards during a reception hosted yesterday evening at the Florida Capitol. Among the winners was Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue’s Fire Chief David Downey, who was announced as the winner of the Florida Fire Chief of the Year Award.  The annual awards ceremony is held to reward and honor those in the fire service community who have shown exceptional service to Floridians.

Chief Downey has served with the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue for 28 years, where he started as a Firefighter and Paramedic in 1988. He moved through a series of promotions where he earned the respected rankings of Lieutenant, then Captain and later moved into the position of Chief Fire Officer with Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue. Chief Downey showed no signs of slowing down as he was later appointed Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Division Chief in 2003 and Assistant Fire Chief in 2010.

Chief Downey is also a leader of Florida Task Force 1, an Urban Search and Rescue Force that responds to domestic and international disasters. Chief Downey and Florida Task Force 1 responded most recently to the 2010 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti, which they were recognized for with a resolution by the Florida Cabinet in 2010.

The Florida Fire Chiefs’ Association nominated Chief Downey for the Fire Chief of the Year Award.
