WITHLACOOCHEE, Fla. — CFO and State Fire Marshal Jeff Atwater honored the winners of the Florida Fire Service Awards during a reception hosted yesterday evening at the Florida Capitol. Among the winners was Senior Forest Ranger Jared Dorrier, who was announced as winner of the Forestry Firefighter of the Year Award. The annual Fire Service Award ceremony is held to reward and honor those in the fire service community who have shown exceptionalism in their profession.

Senior Forest Ranger Dorrier has served with the Florida Forest Service for 10 years, where he oversees mitigation burns in Pasco County and in West Hernando County, as well as the training for such burns. He is the lead instructor for the Forest Service’s Certified Prescribed Burn Manager Course, where he applies his years of experience and expertise to develop the skills of new forest rangers.

In late 2012, he was severely injured during a training class and could have chosen to leave the fire service profession. However, despite his injuries, he chose to continue on in hope of setting an example for his young son about the value of hard work and fortitude. According to his peers, ‘his resilience, determination and heart are an inspiration to all of us in the fire service.’

Forest Ranger Dorrier was nominated by the Florida Forest Service, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
