CFO Jeff Atwater Sponsors Cabinet Resolution Supporting Holocaust Victims

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater today sponsored a resolution signed by the Florida Cabinet recognizing April 12 through April 19, 2015, as “Days of Remembrance” honoring the victims of the Holocaust. The observance also includes “Holocaust Remembrance Day,” known as Yom HaShoah, on April 16.

“In memory of the victims of the Holocaust, in honor of its survivors, and in utmost gratitude for the risks taken by rescuers and liberators, Floridians are encouraged to use this as an occasion to rededicate themselves to the principles of human dignity and respecting individual freedoms,” said CFO Atwater.

During this time, all Floridians are reminded of the resources available to Holocaust survivors and heirs. The Department of Financial Services, Division of Consumer Services works with educational and community services organizations across Florida to educate survivors on new and existing restitution programs and provide assistance with claims filing. Since 2011, the Division has assisted with the recovery of more than $5.2 million through its Holocaust Victims Assistance Program.

To further assist Holocaust survivors and their heirs, CFO Atwater led the charge in 2011 to waive a 10 percent transaction fee previously assessed by financial institutions on Holocaust survivors’ reparation payments from the German government. By eliminating this 10 percent fee, a significant burden was lifted from the victims or their heirs – many of whom rely on these payments.

Additionally, legislation was passed in 2013 that allowed the Department to seek restitution for Nazi-confiscated bank accounts, art and property and to assist survivors in receiving needed health benefits. While their suffering can never be repaid, it is important to continue supporting those impacted by such a devastating event.
