Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater Statement Regarding the Deaths of Two Firefighters in Florida Wildfires

Contact: Alexis Lambert

TALLAHASSEE—Two Division of Forestry firefighters, Josh Burch and Brett Fulton, lost their lives and two others were injured yesterday while fighting the Blue Ribbon Fire in Hamilton County, one of 1,500 wildfires continuing to burn as a result of a drought that began May 1, 2011.

Florida’s Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater, who also serves as the State Fire Marshal, offered the following statement.

“Today, we mourn the loss of Josh Burch and Brett Fulton, the brave firefighters who tragically lost their lives while fighting to protect our fellow Floridians from the wildfires that have been burning throughout our state. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families and the entire firefighter community.”

“The firefighters of the Division of Forestry deserve our gratitude for moving on a moment’s notice to fight these fires. They are the first responders who put their lives on the line to protect us, our homes and our communities from these wildfires.”

Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater, a statewide elected official and officer of the Florida Cabinet, oversees the Department of Financial Services.  CFO Atwater’s priorities include fighting financial fraud, abuse and waste in government, reducing government spending and regulatory burdens that chase away businesses, and providing transparency and accountability in spending.
