CFO & State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis Requests $3.6 Million for First Responders' Mental Health Support
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis announced a request for $3.6 million in funding to improve mental health care for Florida's first responders, including firefighters, law enforcement, dispatchers, and Emergency Medical Services personnel. During the 2025 Legislative Session, the Florida Department of Financial Services (DFS) will work with lawmakers and stakeholders statewide to secure funding and develop a comprehensive mental health, peer support program, and psychological services to support Florida's first responders.
CFO & State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis said, "First responders face unique challenges daily, dealing with traumatic situations that can impact their mental health. Serving as your CFO and State Fire Marshal, I've seen first-hand the toll that tragedies like the Surfside building collapse and the Pulse Nightclub shooting took on these men and women. Unfortunately, our first responders see suffering every day, and it has led to an increase in issues like PTSD and suicide rates among these brave individuals. Research shows that many first responders are at a greater risk for PTSD than the general public, with estimates of nearly 30% of firefighters and 20% of police officers being affected. The suicide rate in this group is also alarmingly high, often exceeding the rates of on-duty fatalities. These facts highlight the critical need for effective mental health resources and support tailored for first responders in our state.
"Although existing programs provide mental health support for our first responders, with this funding request, we aim to enhance their accessibility and effectiveness while tackling the stigma around mental health in this community. These heroes often see unthinkable things and are thrown into challenging situations, which can significantly affect their mental well-being. We need to ensure they can seek help without fear of judgment, and it's essential to encourage open discussions about mental health and to change the perception that asking for help is a sign of weakness. I am honored to seek this funding, and I am committed to working with lawmakers statewide to bring this initiative across the finish line. I always say we don't have safe communities, good schools, and a thriving economy without a great safety net of first responders working to protect us. Together, we can ensure they have the resources to support their mental well-being and that Florida remains the nation's safest and most first responder friendly state in the country."
Florida Professional Firefighters President Wayne “Bernie” Bernoska said, “Florida’s first responders dedicate their lives to protecting the residents and visitors of our state. We commend CFO Patronis for his leadership in expanding access to critical PTSD treatment for those impacted by the traumatic realities of their work. This funding request by CFO Patronis represents the next step forward in equipping first responders with the resources and support they need to manage stress and overcome trauma to thrive both on and off duty.”
Florida Sheriffs Association Immediate Past President Sheriff Bill Leeper said, “First responders have a tough job; we need to ensure they have the tools to manage both their physical and mental health. CFO Patronis is taking on this battle, and I’m excited to join him. Let's make sure our heroes have every tool available to them.”
Florida Police Chiefs Association President Chief Charlie Vazquez said, "Addressing mental health challenges is essential to maintaining the resilience of our first responders. CFO Patronis has the full support of the Florida Police Chiefs in his mission to bolster these vital services."
Here Tomorrow Chair & Founder Joe Kenney said, "Every call first responders take has the potential to impact their mental health; it's vital that resources are provided to help them cope. No one needs to suffer alone and thank you to CFO Patronis for stepping up for these heroes."
2nd Alarm Project Executive Director Dr. Kellie O’Dare said, "Investing in the mental wellness of first responders is an investment in the safety of our entire community. Thank you, CFO Patronis, for your unwavering commitment to this cause. Each step forward builds a healthier, safer community for everyone."
UCF RESTORES Executive Director Deborah Beidel said, "Ensuring that first responders have access to mental health care is our top priority at UCF Restores. We work every day to provide these important resources for our first responders, and I can’t thank the CFO enough for advocating for these heroes.”
