Ocala, Fla. – Today, Florida’s Chief Financial Officer and State Fire Marshal Jeff Atwater joined by family members and fire service personnel from across the state, recognized firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty at the annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial Ceremony on the grounds of the Florida State Fire College.
“It is a privilege to attend this event for the singular purpose of recognizing those who made the ultimate sacrifice while keeping their communities, and our families, safe and secure,” said CFO Atwater. “We know that every time firefighters respond to a call, they put their lives on the line; they deserve our deepest gratitude for their selfless service today and every day.”
Captain Glen Rhodes, of the Sanibel Fire Control District, was recognized during the ceremony. Captain Rhodes’ name was added to the memorial this year—it is the 184th name. Captain Rhodes lost his life while trying to save another in 1968.
