MIAMI, Fla. – Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater was named Florida’s 2016 Consumer Champion during an annual awards ceremony hosted Thursday night by the Florida Association for Insurance Reform. The annual FAIR awards recognize insurance and policy leaders whose work has made a meaningful difference in the lives of Floridians. During the 2015 legislative session, CFO Atwater championed several consumer-oriented insurance bills, including significant policy changes in life insurance and health insurance.
“I believe that Floridians need strong representation when insurance issues are discussed, and it’s my privilege to go to bat for the people I’ve been elected to represent,” said CFO Atwater. “I am honored to receive this award, and I thank the FAIR team for the work that they do on behalf of Florida’s more than 20 million residents.”
Succeeding on every legislative front, sweeping reforms have now been implemented that include a ban on balance billing, also known as surprise medical billing. The term balance billing describes a process in which medical providers bill patients for out-of-network medical costs that are not covered by insurance. Also included was a landmark life insurance bill that passed the Florida Legislature without a single no vote. The measure put an end to a disturbing industry-wide business practice that drastically reduced the number of life insurance policies that were paid out properly and in a timely manner. This nationwide practice was discovered in Florida and the CFO’s efforts to end it were featured on a recent segment of CBS News’ “60 Minutes.”
CFO Atwater joined fellow award recipients State Senators Anitere Flores and Maria Sachs and State Representative Holly Raschein who were presented with Outstanding Legislator Awards.
FAIR aims to educate consumers about insurance public policy. It works to achieve a balance within the insurance industry through continuous dialogue and keeping communication among stakeholders as transparent as possible. Consumers can learn more about FAIR by visiting
