NAPLES, Fla. — CFO and State Fire Marshal Jeff Atwater honored the winners of the Florida Fire Service Awards during a reception hosted yesterday evening at the Florida Capitol. Among the winners was Naples Fire-Rescue Department’s Senior Fire Inspector Katherine Szostak, who was announced winner of the Florida Fire Inspector of the Year Award. The annual awards ceremony is held to reward and honor those in the fire service community who have shown excellence in their profession.

Inspector Szostak has been a leader in the City of Naples’ efforts in the area of fire inspection services since joining the Naples Fire-Rescue Department in 2006. She is a well respected and valuable member of the City of Naples team, ensuring a fair certification process and that buildings are equipped with the proper fire control safety equipment.

In one instance, a condo-owner and fire alarm technician were at odds; the owner threatened to disconnect the fire alarm and jeopardize all units on his floor. Inspector Szostak was called to the scene, where she respectfully listened, built rapport with the owner, determined the issue, and was able to guide all involved to a reasoned conclusion.

Inspector Szostak was nominated by the Florida Fire Marshals and Inspectors Association.
