PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — CFO and State Fire Marshal Jeff Atwater honored the winners of the Florida Fire Service Awards during a reception hosted yesterday evening at the Florida Capitol. Among the winners was Palm Beach County Fire and Rescue’s Firefighter Al Pulvirenti, who was announced as winner of the Career Firefighter of the Year Award. The annual Fire Service Awards ceremony is held to reward and honor those in the fire service community who have shown exceptionalism in their profession.
Firefighter Pulvirenti spotted a home on fire on his way to work April 4, 2015. He altered his route, drove toward the fire and rushed into the burning home to remove Lenka Kajcevska, her daughter and her grandson. Once the family was safely outside, Firefighter Pulvirenti proceeded to control the fire with a garden hose. The fire was eventually contained to a room in the back of the house, and the majority of the home was saved.
Firefighter Pulvirenti earned the nickname “Angel” that day, as Lenka Kajcevska concluded that he was her family’s guardian angel.
Firefighter Pulvirenti was nominated for this award by the Florida State Firefighters’ Association.
