For the third consecutive year, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the State Fire Marshal teamed up to demonstrate the dangers of Christmas trees that are left to dry out during the holidays.

Nearly 40 percent of home fires caused by Christmas trees occur in January when trees tend to dry out, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

On average, there is one death for every 142 home fires nationwide, but that rises to one death in 40 Christmas tree-related home fires. One in three Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems, the association states.
