NICEVILLE, Fla. - The Florida State Fire College will host its 10th annual Florida Volunteer Firefighter Training this week on the campus of Northwest Florida State College in Niceville. More than 250 volunteer firefighters across Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi and Georgia have pre-registered for this event that begins tomorrow, Wednesday, September 16th and runs through Sunday, September 20th. This training event is hosted at no charge to Florida volunteer firefighters and costs just $20 for non-resident firefighters.

Online registration will close Thursday, September 17th at 6pm CST.  Walk-in registrations are welcomed, but class availability is limited.

“This unique training opportunity provides access to training for the men and women who volunteer their time for the protection of others,” said CFO Jeff Atwater, who also serves as Florida’s State Fire Marshal. “This event offers in-depth, hands-on training not only to Florida’s firefighter community, but it has now grown to include several southern states.”

Included in this year’s training event are a variety of courses that range from two hours to 40 hours in length involving hands-on, live-fire training in areas ranging from basic firefighting to forestry firefighting, engine company operations, vehicle extrication, and animal first aid. The free event has been made possible through the cooperation of Florida’s local fire departments, the Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Florida Forest Service, and the Florida Fire and Emergency Services Foundation.

Opportunities for media coverage will be available on Friday evening at 6pm as well as Saturday and Sunday from 9am – 4pm. Additional interviews can be arranged upon request of the press office.
