[P]eople forget things. They lose things. We’ve all seen the plethora of reality shows in which folks bid for the contents of unclaimed storage sheds — usually junk other than the treasures the producers seed the units with.

In real life there are also unclaimed safety deposit boxes — lots of them. Periodically, and when owners can’t be located, the state holds a public auction where these contents are sold. Imagine what kinds of things people keep in a safe deposit box.

As a matter of fact, you can take a look at a representative sample of the offerings at the state website. FYI, the auction will be held at the Jacksonville Marriott with a public preview Friday and the auction beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Florida’s unclaimed property program has another side. Millions of people are due money they likely never knew was coming, whether it’s trust holdings, utility deposits, a rebate or a forgotten savings account. You may even be a beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

Opinion Page editor Jim Sutton gave it a whirl, and learned that he has a life insurance check in the amount of $50 waiting for him — under a Vilano Beach address he had 35 years ago.

A call to Atwater’s press people got a quick reply. In St. Johns County there are 49,741 claimable accounts worth $10,529,678. For those readers in adjoining counties: Clay has 52,553 accounts; Putnam, 23,939; Flagler, 27,043; and Duval, 301,000. The four-county total value of the accounts is $95,316,945.
