TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – May is Military Appreciation Month and Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater recognizes the commitment and sacrifices made by the current and former military members who call Florida home. Florida is home to 61,000 active service members and 12,000 National Guardsman who report to one of the state’s 20 major military installations. Florida also boasts the third largest veteran population in the nation, due in part to its commitment to keeping taxes low and creating the conditions for economic success.

“Florida remains the most veteran-friendly state in nation, and I’m committed to reducing bureaucracy and increasing transparency to ensure those who serve our country can smoothly transition into the workforce or school and continue the next phase of their career,” said CFO Atwater. “I am eternally grateful for every individual who has served or is serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and National Guard for it is their selfless dedication that enables our great nation to thrive in freedom and liberty.”

Florida’s veteran population consists of 160,000 women veterans, 1.2 million wartime veterans, and more than 231,000 veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan. Throughout the month of May, the Department of Financial Services will highlight a few of these men and women from across Florida for their leadership in military service and in business.
