MEDIA ADVISORY: State Fire Marshal Orlando Office to Participate in Arson Awareness Week Event Hosted by Reedy Creek Fire Department

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. – The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office, which operates under the direction of Chief Financial Officer and State Fire Marshal Jeff Atwater, is celebrating 2015 Arson Awareness Week by participating in community events across Florida to raise awareness about the harmful impact of arson.
AAW is celebrated May 3-9, 2015, and this year’s focus is Accelerant Detection Canines – Sniffing out Arson.  The State Fire Marshal’s Office is home to a team of K-9s whose work bolsters the efforts of investigators to solve arson-related crimes and reduce their rate of occurrence in Florida.
Several of the SFM’s K-9s will be on hand and participating in live demonstrations.

The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office implemented its K-9 accelerant detection program in 1998. The current K-9 Unit includes: K-9 Bailey and handler Travis Kincaid in Pensacola, K-9 Booker and handler Jeff Batz in Lake Wales, K-9 Fresca and handler David Young in Jacksonville, K-9 Penzy and handler Amelia Bowling-Hitchcock in Daytona, K-9 Brandon and handler Jayson Deese in Panama City, K-9 Ember and handler Ross Holt in Plantation, and Explosives detection K-9 Bella and handler Monty Taylor.
