TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – As February is National Cancer Prevention Month, Florida’s Chief Financial Officer and State Fire Marshal Jeff Atwater highlights an initiative that affords the Department of Financial Services’ Division of State Fire Marshal sworn law enforcement investigators the opportunity to participate in a routine comprehensive health screening designed to monitor the types of cancers studies have shown occur at a higher rate among fire service professionals.

“Fire service professionals dedicate their lives and careers to the protection of their communities, and I feel it is important to do all that is possible in support of their long-term health and wellbeing,” said CFO Atwater. “Through the power of early detection, these screenings can save lives, and I am proud we can make these screenings available to this most deserving group of individuals.”

These annual HazMat, or hazardous materials, physical examinations include a series of tests designed to identify cancer-causing carcinogens commonly found on fire scenes. A series of routine blood work and a urinalysis test, along with a chest x-ray and heavy metal testing. A stress test is completed to monitor overall health, and a head-to-toe skin cancer check is performed.

Through early detection testing, fire service professionals are armed with better personal health information, which enables them to make more informed health decisions.
