TALLAHASSEE – Tom Gallagher, Florida's chief financial officer, today joined Dr. Harry Orf, Vice President for Scientific Operations and Professor of Chemistry for The Scripps Research Institute, to tour the new site chosen for the development of a permanent Scripps Florida campus, a state-of-the-art biomedical research institute.   The new Abacoa/Briger site is located in Jupiter as part of the campus of Florida Atlantic University (FAU).
"Scripps Florida is a monumental step towards diversifying our state's economy and creating high-wage, high-tech jobs," said Gallagher. "It is also exciting that Scripps Florida may soon be recognized around the world for melding science with computer technology to fight potential pandemic viruses, including the threat of bird flu."
In November 2003 Florida approved an investment of $310 million from federal economic development stimulus dollars to facilitate the start-up and operation of Scripps Florida to enhance biomedical education, research and technology, and to promote economic development and diversity in Florida.  In addition, Palm Beach County committed to providing $140 million for the acquisition and construction of a permanent facility for Scripps Florida.
"Now we need to concentrate our efforts on graduating Florida students who are qualified and ready to take advantage of the opportunities that Scripps Florida has to offer," Gallagher said.
