MIAMI - Tom Gallagher, Chief Financial Officer of the State of Florida, was presented with an award by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation in recognition of the work that he has done on behalf of Florida's substantial Holocaust survivor population.

Norman Braman, past president of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, presented Gallagher with a Tzedakah Box. Tzedakah is a Hebrew word commonly translated as charity, however the root of the Hebrew word tzedek means "justice." The award inscription honored Gallagher for his "tireless pursuit of justice on behalf of Holocaust survivors and advocacy for their welfare."

During the ceremony, Gallagher was acknowledged for the work he has done on behalf of Holocaust survivors, including establishing one of his personal priorities – that all Holocaust survivors who are in need should be provided with home health care.

Treasurer Gallagher and his representatives have met with numerous professional and lay Jewish leaders throughout Florida, both to learn more about the needs of Holocaust survivors, and to work in coalition with Jewish organizations to prioritize those needs.

Gallagher was in Miami for a day-long series of meetings organized by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. He also met with representatives of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (commonly known as the Claims Conference), Federation Board of Directors members, Holocaust survivor leadership and representatives of South Florida Jewish agencies responsible for providing social services to survivors.

As the state's former insurance commissioner, Gallagher was appointed to serve on the international Commission on Holocaust Era Insurance Claims, also known as ICHEIC.

Federation President Ezra Katz praised Gallagher for his advocacy efforts.

"We look forward to continuing to work with Commissioner Gallagher on advocacy for the needs of survivors in the future," Katz said.
