Live Oak Businessman Faces Arson Solicitation Charge

1/11/2002

Tallahassee - A Live Oak resident has been charged with solicitation to commit arson after investigators with the Division of State Fire Marshal, Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations, uncovered information that the man was seeking to have his business burned.

Robert John Clayton, 56, of 12986 U.S. Highway 90 West, was arrested at his home late Thursday. He was booked into the Suwannee County Jail on the third-degree felony charge. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.

Clayton closed his Clayton Chevron business last September and reportedly was seeking a buyer. Investigators said the alleged solicitation occurred within the last week.

The Suwannee County Drug Task Force and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement assisted state arson investigators in the investigation.

The Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations is a law enforcement branch of the Division of State Fire Marshal that assists other state and local fire and law enforcement agencies in the investigation of fires of suspicious origin. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Division of State Fire Marshal's arson hotline at 1-800-638-3473.
