Yacht Fire in Davie Ruled Accidental

5/9/2002

DAVIE - A fire that destroyed a $6 million yacht here Tuesday has been ruled an accident, investigators with the Division of State Fire Marshal announced today.

The 107-foot motor yacht Emmerson had been docked at the Bradford Marina since January after it ran aground on a coral reef and the hull was damaged. The yacht was reported to be on fire at about 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Investigators with the Division's Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations determined that welders cutting metal on the hull of the yacht with torches accidentally ignited a combustible material inside the ship's hull. The welders along with other employees at the marina attempted to extinguish the fire but were unsuccessful. The Davie Fire Department is continuing to keep watch on the remains of the yacht because it continues to smolder.

The Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations is a law enforcement branch of the Division of State Fire Marshal that assists other state and local fire and law enforcement agencies in the investigation of fires of suspicious origin. To report a suspicious fire, call 1-877-662-7766 (1-877-NOARSON). Information also may be mailed to Arson Control, P.O. Box 1654, Winter Park, FL.
