Historic Jacksonville Beach Pier Destroyed by Fire

Jacksonville Beach - An early morning fire has destroyed one of the most historic and memorable landmarks at Jacksonville Beach.

At approximately 4:00 A.M., Jacksonville Beach firefighters responded to a blaze at the oceanfront pier after a passerby and nearby residents reported fire coming from the structure. As firefighters arrived they found the Pier Point Restaurant building completely consumed in fire. The Pier Point Restaurant existed at the pier along with a bait shop during the days when the historic pier was open to the public. Most recently the building has been vacant awaiting a decision by local governments as to the future of the pier after recent hurricane damage.

The State Fire Marshal, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), and the Jacksonville Beach Police and Fire Departments conducted a joint investigation into the cause of the fire. After an extensive fire scene investigation it has been determined that the fire was caused by an intentional act of arson. "This fire is being investigated as a criminal act of arson. Anyone with information about the fire should call 1-800-638-3473 or the Jacksonville Beach Police Department. A reward of up to $2500.00 is being offered for information leading to an arrest," said Investigator Little of the State Fire Marshal Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations.
