Fire Ravages Saint Augustine Furniture Store

ST. AUGUSTINE - A late night fire has destroyed a long- standing furniture business in St. Augustine.

At approximately 11:00 PM, St. Johns County firefighters were summoned to Chucks Furniture and Bedding on US-1 just south of St. Augustine after a passer-by observed flames coming from the building. As a deputy sheriff arrived on the scene just moments after the call, the building was found heavily involved in fire. It took firefighters several hours to put out the fire and although the building was a total loss, approximately $250,000.00 in new trucks at an adjacent car dealership were saved.

The Florida State Fire Marshal's office, The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms as well as the St. Johns County Fire and Sheriff's Departments conducted an intensive joint investigation into the cause of the fire. After careful processing, the fire was determined to have been intentionally set throughout the showroom just hours after the close of business.

Officials are offering up to a $2500.00 reward for information leading to the arrest of individuals responsible for this criminal act of arson. Anyone with information is asked to call the Florida Arson Hotline at 1-877-NOARSON or the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.
