Department Suspends Hillsborough County Agent’ S License

9/4/2002

TALLAHASSEE-The Florida Department of Insurance has suspended the license of a Seffner insurance agent for misrepresenting the need to purchase replacement annuities to elderly consumers.

Louis Francis Robert, Jr., 39, of 904 Shangri La Drive in Seffner, Florida, separately told two elderly women that he would make an update in each policy's beneficiary section. In one case, he agreed to remove a deceased husband as beneficiary, the other to change the beneficiary. Instead, Robert cashed in both polices in order to purchase new annuities for the purpose of collecting additional commissions. Robert, licensed as a life & health agent since 1987, will be suspended for eighteen months.

Annuities that are cashed in before maturation may be subject to surrender changes. In addition, any interest gains accumulated may be immediately subject to federal and state taxes. Consumers who have questions should call the department's toll-free consumer helpline at 1-800-342-2762 or visit our website at www.fldfs.com.
