Miami Bail Bonds Agent Surrenders to Investigators

MIAMI – A former area bail bondsman turned himself in to authorities today on charges of grand theft, organized fraud and failure to return bail bond collateral.

Investigators with the state's Division of Insurance Fraud say Alan Staple, 51, while doing contract work for Alpha Bail Bonds, collected more than $30,000 in bond premiums from nearly 70 clients, which he failed to turn over to either the agency or the insurance company.

Staple also allegedly failed to return or delayed the return of nearly $10,000 in collateral to clients after the funds were released by the courts.

Staple was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Corrections center, where he will remain pending posting of bond. If convicted of all charges, he could face 40 years in prison.

The Department of Insurance, Division of Insurance Fraud, investigates various forms of fraud in insurance, including health, life, auto, property and workers' compensation insurance. Anyone with information about this case or another possible fraud scheme should call the department's Fraud Hotline at 1-800-378-0445. A reward of up to $25,000 is offered for information leading to a conviction.
