Floridians,

On Tuesday, during a meeting of the Florida Cabinet, I highlighted my push for legislation this year to install vendor transparency measures in the state’s procurement system and fight the influence of foreign governments, including the Communist Party of China. The proposed legislation is outlined in Senate Bill 1428 and House Bill 1149 and sponsored by Senator Tom Wright and Representative Scott Plakon.

As it stands today, our state agencies and local governments who buy off our contracts don’t have a tool to identify whether companies are owned or controlled by a foreign government. If the Legislature wants any information on which country tax dollars go to, we’re too limited. My message is simple - if you receive taxpayer money, you should tell us which country you’re organized in.

This week, I also encouraged Floridians to check their smoke alarms as you change your clocks when Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 14, at 2 a.m. The beginning of Daylight Saving Time is also a great time to review your emergency plans with your family to ensure your loved ones are prepared in the event of a house fire or other emergency. Check with senior family members and neighbors as well to ensure their alarms are in working order.

Lastly, I issued a proclamation recognizing and congratulating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on their recent Super Bowl win against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are well-deserving of this proclamation highlighting their amazing performance and making history as the first team to ever play and win the Super Bowl on their home field. Congratulations to Tom Brady, Gronk and the entire Tampa Bay Buccaneers team on this incredible win. Florida is for winners!

I hope you have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Jimmy
