Floridians,

This week, I issued letters to Experian, Equifax and TransUnion in regards to improperly downgrading families’ credit ratings – even though Floridians are lawfully deferring mortgage payments, which is authorized under the U.S. Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. I recently called on Florida’s Office of Financial Regulation (OFR) to put consumers first and to work with the appropriate lenders and ratings agencies to get this issue resolved as soon as possible.

Additionally, in order to raise awareness of the potential dangers accompanying Christmas trees and holiday decorations, I hosted a Christmas tree burn demonstration with the Tallahassee Fire Department. While Christmas trees are an important part of the holiday season, it is critical that Floridians maintain and dispose of their trees to prevent possible fire-related incidents. Always remember that a dry tree is a dangerous tree. Watering your Christmas tree and unplugging holiday lights prior to going to sleep are simple ways to make sure you enjoy the holidays safely.

Lastly, I also issued a letter to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requesting they coordinate with the White House Coronavirus Task Force and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop more detailed guidance on providing utility workers the COVID-19 vaccine before the 2021 hurricane season, which starts on June 1. Due to the unique impacts of hurricanes and the unpredictable nature of severe weather throughout the state, Florida is reliant on a strong support system of dedicated and highly trained utility and telecommunications workers to support the state’s critical utility infrastructure.

I hope you and your family have a safe and happy weekend.

Sincerely,

Jimmy
