CABINET RECOGNIZES FLORIDA CITY GOVERNMENT WEEK

The designation of Florida City Government Week, October 15 through 21, 2008, provides an appropriate occasion for Floridians to recognize the significant role played by city government in the daily lives of all citizens by offering an opportunity to inform Florida citizens that through theirDr. Carmine Priore involvement, they can shape and influence local, state and national government sectors. The week also serves to recognize all municipal employees and officials for their dedication and commitment to local governments and urge all Floridians to join in this recognition of excellence and public service.

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, when settlers first immigrated to the United States, they congregated in small communities and as more people arrived, these communities grew into cities; and

WHEREAS, in these cities, citizens came together and chose to govern themselves through a democratically established municipal government that had significant daily impact upon all its residents; and

WHEREAS, city government is administered for and by its citizens, and is dependent upon public commitment to, and the understanding of, its many responsibilities; and

WHEREAS, more than seven million Florida citizens claim permanent residence within the boundaries of the cities of our state, with 410 city governments exercising constitutionally guaranteed Home Rule rights; and

WHEREAS, more than 2,000 elected city government officials, and tens of thousands of employees share the responsibility of educating students and citizens concerning city government and the benefits of public services; and

WHEREAS, the Florida League of Cities is committed to the education, communication, and publication of municipal services, issues, concerns, accomplishments, and welfare of the citizens of their respective communities of Florida; and

WHEREAS, the Florida League of Cities is also dedicated to providing Florida’s educators with various educational materials for use in all grade-level classrooms pertaining to city government; and

WHEREAS, with these civic educational materials, educators can convey the importance of participating in activities that further the students’ understanding of city governments in Florida; and

WHEREAS, the designation of Florida City Government Week provides an appropriate occasion for Floridians to recognize the significant role played by city government in the daily lives of all citizens by offering an opportunity to inform Florida citizens that through their involvement, they can shape and influence local, state and national government sectors.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Governor and Cabinet of the State of Florida do hereby declare the week of October 15 through 21, 2008, as

FLORIDA CITY GOVERNMENT WEEK

and recognize all municipal employees and officials for their dedication and commitment to local governments and urge all Floridians to join in this recognition of excellence and public service.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Governor and Cabinet of the State of Florida do hereby express appreciation to the Florida League of Cities for their commitment to the education on Florida’s citizenry.
