CFO Patronis Statement on Passage of Financial Literacy Bill from House Committee

2/23/2022

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, Florida Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis issued the following statement on the House Education and Employment Committee’s favorable hearing of House Bill 1115, High School Graduation Requirements in Personal Finance, sponsored by Representative Busatta Cabrera. This proposal will require Florida high school students earn at least one-half credit of instruction in financial literacy or money management and will teach students about banking practices, money management, credit scores, managing debt, loan applications, insurance policies and local tax assessments. The bill moves next to the House Floor.

CFO Jimmy Patronis said, “Financial literacy is an important key to a strong financial future and learning the basics of credit, budgeting, savings, and investing, can further prepare students for a successful future. This legislation will ensure vital financial literacy resources are available to students before graduation. I applaud the House Education and Employment Committee for taking action today to move this legislation forward. These lessons are also critical to training future generations of Americans to appreciate America’s capitalist system and grow our nation’s pool of entrepreneurs. Thank you to Representative Busatta Cabrera and Senator Hutson for sponsoring the Senate and House bills and for setting students up for success in and out of the classroom.”
