CFO Patronis Applauds Gov. DeSantis for Signing Legislation to Aid Fire Inspectors in Combating Human Trafficking

6/7/2022
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, Florida Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis issued the following statement on Governor DeSantis signing House Bill 615, Human Trafficking. This legislation requires the Florida Alliance to End Human Trafficking to develop training specifically for fire safety inspectors to recognize and report human trafficking. The bill also allows such training to be eligible for the continuing education credits for a fire safety inspector to renew their certification.

CFO Jimmy Patronis said, “As your CFO and State Fire Marshal, I would like to thank Governor DeSantis for signing this life-saving legislation that will allow our state fire safety inspectors to identify and report human trafficking in Florida. We must do all we can to put an end to human trafficking and it takes every single stakeholder working together and sharing information to accomplish that goal. Thank you to the bill sponsors Senator Garcia and Representative Overdorf for commitment to this legislation and ensuring the safety of citizens and visitors alike.”

Senator Ileana Garcia said, “Here in the state of Florida, we will not tolerate the evils of human trafficking and will do whatever is necessary to save as many lives as we can and bring about swift justice to those who commit these heinous crimes. I was honored to pass this bill through the Senate and am grateful for the overwhelming support of CFO Jimmy Patronis and to Governor DeSantis for signing this measure into law.”

Representative Toby Overdorf said, “Human Trafficking is modern day slavery. I am grateful to Governor Ron DeSantis for signing this legislation that will save lives for years to come. My thanks to CFO Patronis for being a strong ally in the fight to end human trafficking in the state of Florida. By training Fire Safety Inspectors on how to recognize and report the signs of human trafficking, we can bring traffickers to justice and save countless lives.”
