FEMA to open Hurricane Irma disaster recovery center in Sunrise

Date: October 08, 2017
Source: Sun Sentinel
Author:  Aric Chokey

Homeowners, businesses and renters recovering from Hurricane Irma can apply for help at an upcoming disaster recovery center.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is planning to open the facility Monday. Specialists will help walk people through the application process to get financial help from the federal government.

The office will open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days per week at Atrium West, which is at 7771 W. Oakland Park Blvd. in Sunrise. No closing date has been set.

FEMA advises people who need help and plan on visiting a center to pre-register online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362.

Residents should have bank account information, insurance policies and social security numbers on-hand.

Financial help comes on a case-by-case basis and FEMA does not pay for items already covered by insurance, but underinsured applicants could be eligible for more help. Residents should still register even if they have insurance, FEMA advises.
