Florida Insurance Consumer Advocate Champions Passage

of Balance Billing Legislation

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Discussions surrounding legislation to put an end to balance billing continued until the final hours of the 2016 Legislative Session. Ultimately, the Legislature successfully passed the measure and effectively placed a ban on surprise medical billing in Florida. Florida Insurance Consumer Advocate, Sha’Ron James, a longtime supporter of consumer-focused solutions to this medical billing problem, released a statement in support of the legislature’s decision.

ICA James said, “I applaud the Florida Legislature for passing legislation that bans balance billing. The impact this legislation will have on Florida’s families is tremendous. Thank you to bill sponsors Senator Rene Garcia and Representative Carlos Trujillo for their fortitude in championing this great legislation. I look forward to continuing to work with stakeholders to develop balanced solutions, like this one, that protect the interests of Florida’s families.”

The Insurance Consumer Advocate is committed to finding solutions to insurance issues facing Floridians, calling attention to questionable insurance practices, promoting a viable insurance market responsive to the needs of Florida’s diverse population and assuring that rates are fair and justified.
