TALLAHASSEE—Florida CFO Jeff Atwater today announced the arrest of Johnathan Cumbie of Trenton on charges of setting fire to three different Gilchrist County homes in the past week. Cumbie was identified as having been seen leaving one of the residences approximately five minutes before the fire.
“Arson is a serious and potentially deadly crime,” said CFO Atwater. “This man admitted he terrorized his neighborhood and I am proud of the work done by my office as well as the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office to bring him to justice.”
Cumbie was taken to the Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office where he ultimately admitted that he acted alone in setting the fires in retaliation against the property owner for his pending eviction.
Cumbie was arrested, booked at Gilchrist County Jail and charged with three counts of first degree arson. If convicted, Cumbie could face a term of imprisonment not exceeding 30 years or, when specifically provided by statute, by imprisonment for a term of years not exceeding life imprisonment on each count.
