CFO Sink Pushes Governor Crist to Agenda Deepwater Horizon Response Efforts for Next Cabinet Meeting

5/5/2010

CONTACT: Kevin Cate, 850-413-2842

TALLAHASSEE—Florida CFO Alex Sink today sent a letter to Governor Charlie Crist urging him to place a “Good Cause” item on the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund agenda for the May 11, 2010, Cabinet Meeting to provide the Governor and Cabinet a public status report on the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform disaster and resulting massive oil spill set to reach Florida's beaches before next week's meeting.

“Several of us have visited the site and received individual briefings on this national disaster,” CFO Sink wrote. “However, I think it is vital for the Trustees to have an opportunity at a public meeting to receive a more comprehensive report from key stakeholders and to discuss Florida’s options for responding to the oil spill.”

A copy of the letter follows below:

May 5, 2010

The Honorable Charlie Crist
Governor of Florida
The Capitol
400 South Monroe Street
Tallahassee, Florida 32399-0001

Dear Governor Crist:

I am writing to request that you place a “Good Cause” item on the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund agenda for the May 11, 2010, Cabinet Meeting.

The purpose of this informational item is to provide the Governor and Cabinet a status report on the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform disaster.   Several of us have visited the site and received individual briefings on this national disaster. However, I think it is vital for the Trustees to have an opportunity at a public meeting to receive a more comprehensive report from key stakeholders and to discuss Florida’s options for responding to the oil spill.

This agenda item should be led by Mike Sole, Secretary of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and include status report updates from the following:

·         An update by Secretary Sole on how prepared Florida’s most likely affected counties are to respond and what assistance may be needed by local and state government from the federal government
·         A report by a senior executive from BP on its efforts to date and its commitment to assisting Florida’s citizens, businesses and governments
·         A presentation by a representative of the Oil Spill Academic Task Force on their planned activities
·         An update by the Division of Emergency Management on coordination issues that need to be addressed
·         An update from the U.S. Coast Guard on Florida operations
·         A report by key marine fisheries stakeholders from the Panhandle region on assessments of the scope of the threat and their evaluation of Florida’s response
·         A presentation by groups such as The Nature Conservancy, Coastal Conservation Association, Florida Coastal and Ocean Alliance, or others on assessments of the scope of the threat and their evaluation of Florida’s response
·         A report by Commissioner Bronson addressing aquaculture issues
·         A report on the activities of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission
·         A report on the activities of the Volunteer Florida Foundation regarding volunteer mobilization efforts
·         A report by the Florida League of Cities and Florida Association of Counties on what local governments are facing and on what BP, state and federal governments can be doing to assist them
·         A discussion of the Attorney General’s coordination with other states on possible litigation regarding the spill
·         A presentation by VISIT Florida on their plans to educate potential visitors about the extent of damages, if any, caused by the spill and about how they will continue to market Florida as a world-class recreational destination

I look forward to these presentations and I thank you in advance.  Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Alex Sink
