Division of State Fire
Marshal
Bureau of Forensic Fire and Explosives
Analysis
Photographic Processing

The Bureau has provided photographic processing for the Division of State Fire Marshal
from 1990 through 2007. From January
1, 2006 to January 1, 2007, only 55
rolls of film were submitted for
processing. In 1998, 1999, and 2000
it was not unusual for the photographic
laboratory to process 400 rolls per
month. The need for conventional 35mm
film processing has declined as
investigators have migrated to digital
cameras. As a result, the Bureau will
phase out its ability to process 35mm
film in 2007 and will instead contract
that service to a conventional film
laboratory. The Bureau will continue to
archive any 35mm film for investigators
as they are submitted.
This does not mean that the "Photo Lab"
will be closed. Over the years, the
Bureau has experienced an increase in
the number of "special projects" it
receives. Because photographs and
digital images are used in both criminal
and civil litigation, it is often
necessary to prepare reproduction prints
and enlargements for attorneys and
investigators. In some cases, a compact
disk with copies of the scanned
photographs or digital images is
requested. In calendar year 2006, the
Bureau processed 93 "special requests".
In "special requests" coming from
private attorneys and investigators, the
cost of processing must be paid by check
to the Florida Department of Financial
Services. Please contact Ann Walker at the laboratory should you have any questions.
