Pumper
Hook -Pike Pole

The fire engine shown below was one of the first fire engines imported into the new world. The pumper was a built in London, England by a man named Newsham in 1731.  In December of that year it was delivered to the new city of New York, which was originally Neuw Amsterdam.   It was front page news from Philadelphia to Boston. It was reported that it could deliver about "2 hogs head of water per minute", that's about 110 gallons per minute, with a good engine crew.

New Yorks First fire Engine

The men who mounted the fire engine and did the pumping were called "engine men".  That name is still used today to describe firefighters who work on fire engines or pumpers.  They, too, are called engine men.
