Firefighters must learn to put out fires in many different materials.  In this picture, the firefighters are learning to extinguish a fire in a propane gas tank.

They must be very careful and keep the tank cool with water so it will not explode.  While they are cooling the tank, they keep moving closer until the fire officer can shut off the gas valve on the tank.

After the fire is out the firefighters will slowly back up and continue to cool the tank to prevent the hot metal from igniting any left over gases.

Firefighters must train every day.  It is only with constant training and studying do they keep up with today's rapidly changing technology.  Because there are new materials and types of building construction always being introduced, they have to keep studying. They must always keep practicing their basic skills too.  Even if they don't do certain things all of the time,  they never know when they will need to do something that they learned a long time ago.  You can't forget what to do when there is an emergency.
