 Fire Extinguisher Training

Hook -Pike Pole

Firefighters must know how to put out all types of fire.  If you use the wrong type or wrong size of fire extinguisher on a fire, the fire will not go out or could get bigger.  For this reason the firefighters must learn to choose the proper types of fire extinguishers for each of the different classes of fire. They must also learn how to use the different types of fire extinguishers on the different types of fires.

Below are some movies of firefighters training at the Florida State Fire College fire extinguisher training site.  They must follow the direction of the instructor and all must observe all safety rules.

The Paint Locker Fire

In this picture the firefighters are learning how to extinguish a fire in a paint storage cabinet.

They must choose the right extinguisher and the right size to put out the fire.  They must also approach the fire correctly and know exactly when to start the fire extinguisher.  If they fail to do it correctly the fire will not go out and may spread to other things around the cabinet.

The instructor guides the firefighter student as he applies the fire extinguisher.

The Running Spill Fire.

Sometimes a flammable liquid, such as gasoline, leaks from a tank or pipe.  When it catches on fire the liquid fumes on the ground and in the air start to burn.  The fire then follows the liquid back to the tank.

Here a firefighter learns how to put out a moving flammable liquid fire.  He must put out the fire and keep it from starting over again.  It takes special training to do this.  If the fire extinguisher is not started at the right place, or is not the right type, the fire could get worse.

The Rack Fire.

Flammable liquids are often stored in large drums.  Many times these drums are stacked in a rack so they take up less floor space.  With expert training, firefighters at the Florida State Fire College learn that by working in teams they can put out even large fires with fire extinguishers.  Here a team of firefighters put out a fire in a rack of large drums of flammable liquids.  They must work together to get the fire out and must be constantly watching out for the fire and each other.

As with all of these fires we show here, the firefighter must be aware that the hot metal may cause the fire to start again.
