Bedrooms rank with kitchens and living rooms as one of the three big areas where fires start. The top causes of bedroom fires are smoking and children playing with matches or lighters.

  • Never let anybody smoke in bed!

  • Examine electric blankets, hair dryers, steam irons, and other appliances that give off heat. Look for signs of overheating, or cracking, fraying or worn cords. Keep all appliances away from water, and unplug them when not in use.

  • Heating equipment can be a hazard in bedrooms too. Pay special attention to distance between heaters and beds or clothing. Remember, at least 3 feet between the heater and any combustible materials such as bed sheets, curtains or paper. Check electrical cords, plugs and outlets.

  • Know two ways out if there is a fire! If the door is hot - go to the window to escape. If your room is upstairs stand at the window and wave so the firefighters can see you. If the door is cool and you can go out - crawl low under the smoke.
