    We have been told by some departments that they have been running into "smoke in structure" calls that turn out to be intrusion alarms activating smoke emission equipment. This is an idea which comes from Great Britain, the country that is also the greatest supplier of artificial smoke and smoke generators used by fire training centers.     The U.S. Chemical Safety Board has released a training CD with 8 CSB - produced Safety Videos depicting events, findings and recommendations from accident investigations by the agency. Several contain sophisticated computer animations of events that led to explosions and fire. You can down load the segments or write to them ad request the entire CD. Lots of good stuff there!

    The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the Department of Homeland Security's United States Fire Administration (USFA) announce the release of a Guide to Model Policies and Procedures for Emergency Vehicle Safety. This innovative, web-based educational program is aimed at reducing the impact of vehicle related incidents on the fire service and the communities they protect.
     
  • Firefighter High Cholesterol Program
    The NVFC has been fortunate to partner with Merck/Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals (MSP). The Sounding the Alarm For High Cholesterol Program has arrived! The purpose of this Program is to educate all firefighters on high cholesterol and that it comes from two sources: food and family. To help with this, the NVFC Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program has created a national mailing with MSP that will help firefighters on the road to heart-health. The mailing includes posters, decals, magnets, and the NVFC Hearth-Healthy Firefighter Resource Guide on CD-ROM. All firefighters are encouraged to go to www.cholesterolalarm.com to take the Heart-Healthy Challenge. The Challenge is an online quiz that tests firefighters' knowledge of cholesterol, heart-health, and firefighter fatalities.
