Hazardous Materials Courses and Fees
Hazardous Materials Series:
Note: The Department of Education Statewide Course Numbering System uses the FFP prefix to indicate thoses courses within the Fire Science Curriculum. The first number indicates the level, either Freshman (1) or Sophomore (2), and the last three numbers indicate the course topic. Due to the variety of courses offered through out the state it should be noted that courses with the same last three numbers are the same course, contain the same course content and contact hours regardless of the first leveling number.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TECHNICIAN:
FSFC 508 (160 contact hours, 0 college credits, class size: minimum 15, maximum 30)
Textbook: IAFF Training for Hazardous Materials Response Technician
Course Fee: $300.00 payable to Florida Department of Financial Services (The registration fee includes a lab fee)
This is the 160-hour hands-on practices HazMat course in which students will fulfill the functions of HazMat technicians in a variety of full-scale field scenarios. These scenarios include making entries into hazardous materials scenes and determination of type of incident by observation, monitoring, and research. Students will set up full-size incident command and decontamination facilities and respond to simulated container and vehicle emergencies.
NOTE: Prerequisite: HazMat Operations Level

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TECHNICIAN BRIDGE PROGRAM TO IAFF160
PD4025
Course Description:
This 104 hour
class will allow students who completed Hazardous Materials I & II classes to
meet the objectives of the IAFF 160 hour program. Topics to be covered
include: Health and Safety, Pre-Incident Planning, Chemistry, Detection Devices,
Terrorism, Patient Support, and Practical Evolutions. After completing the
program and the SERC Task Book, students may take the Hazardous Materials
Technician state certification exam.
Purpose:
To
bridge individuals who completed Hazardous Materials I and Hazardous Materials
II programs to the 160 hour State of Florida Hazardous Materials Technician
(DHS/IAFF) program. This would allow individuals who did not complete the
program and take the certification examination the opportunity to complete the
training and take the Hazardous Materials Technician certification exam.
Individuals must
complete the 104 hour program by May 15, 2007, and take the state certification
examination by June 30, 2007. The SERC Task book must also be completed
prior to setting for the state certification examination.
Eligible Instructors:
The program must be
instructed by a Florida State Certified Instructor I or higher who has completed
the 40 hour Train-the-Trainer under the auspices of FSFC and IAFF.

IAFF Chemistry
Practical Evolutions
Saphire, Travel IR, other monitoring devices
Hazards of air transport incidents
Health & Safety
Pre-Incident Planning Module
IAFF Terrorism Module
Patient Support Module
Limitations during water transportation emergencies
Responses to shutting down pipeline incidents to limit environmental problems
Pre-test requirement
:
Students will be given a test on the Haz Mat I and Haz Mat II information on the
first day. Students must pass the pre-test in order to attend the class.
COST:
$200.00 tuition fee + room and board
Students
must attend
all 104 hours regardless of any other training they may
have already taken.

AIR MONITORING
FSFC 510 (24 contact hours, 0 college credits, class size: 10 minimum, 20 maximum)
Textbook: Hazardous Gas Monitors
Course Fee: $96.00, payable to Florida Department of Financial Services
This training course is designed to teach the student how to select and use the different types of monitoring devices that may be used in the field. At completion the student will be able to demonstrate the proper use of different monitoring equipment and how to interpret the results.
NOTE: Prerequisite: HazMat Technician

CHLORINE EMERGENCIES
FSFC 515 (24 Hours, 0 college credits, class size: 15 minimum, 20 maximum)

Textbook: Included
Course Fee: $96.00 payable to Florida Department of Financial Services (The registration fee includes a lab fee)
This course covers the uses of chlorine, manufacturing of chlorine, properties of chlorine, health effects and first aid procedures, contingency planning, container construction, personal protective equipment, site management, and use of chlorine kits, followed by hands on scenarios.
