Can I insure my identity against identity theft?

The short answer is, Yes! Whether it's a good idea or not is another question.

Sean M. Shaw, Florida's consumer advocate, noted recently that some insurers have begun offering identity theft insurance with some 10 million affected by identity theft in the last year.

"Identity theft insurance does not cover direct monetary loses," Shaw said. "Most identity theft insurance policies have policy limits of $5,000 for lost wages. Consumers should also inquire about deductibles. Some policies require you to pay the first $100 - $500 of costs incurred for reclaiming your financial identity."
