91-20 Nonresident Surplus Lines Insurance
Florida Statutes 626.9272 defines a “SURPLUS
LINES AGENT” as an individual licensed to handle placement of insurance
coverages with unauthorized insurers and to place such coverages with
authorized insurers as to which the licensee is not licensed as an agent.
Application Qualifications:
- Complete an online application for License and submit
appropriate fees.
Apply for license
- Be a natural person at least 18 years of age.
- Must not be a resident of the state of Florida.
- Be a United States citizen or legal alien who
possesses a work authorization from the United States Immigration and
Naturalization Services.
- Be fingerprinted on cards provided by the Florida
Department of Financial Services. Two fingerprint cards will be mailed to
the applicant.
- File a fifty thousand dollar ($50,000) bond, using a
bond form provided by the Department

- Be licensed and appointed as a Florida nonresident
general lines insurance agent (Type & Class 9-20); or
- Be licensed and appointed as a Florida nonresident
managing general agent (Type & Class 00-60); or
- Be licensed and appointed as a Florida nonresident
service representative (Type & Class 00-55); and
- Must take and pass the state examination.

State Examination Qualifications
Must be completed within four years of application date
- Successfully complete a 60 hours of approved insurance
course work in surplus and excess lines insurance approved by the Florida
Department of Financial Services

- Have worked for a minimum
of one year for a licensed and appointed surplus lines insurance agent
