COMPTROLLER'S MEMORANDUM NO. 06 (2001-02)
SUBJECT: STATE AGENCY AS HOLDER FOR UNCLAIMED PROPERTY INQUIRIES
In the past, the Bureau of Accounting has been designated as the point of
contact (holder) for uncashed state warrants and has performed the reporting
and remitting requirements of Chapter 717, Florida Statutes. Beginning April
1, 2002, each state agency will assume the holder responsibilities as set forth
in Chapter 717, Florida Statutes, and shall designate an individual to coordinate
this effort with the Bureau of Unclaimed Property.
The Bureau of Accounting will continue to report state warrant information
and remit the applicable monies to the Bureau of Unclaimed Property on behalf
of state agencies. Reports reflecting what was sent to Unclaimed Property will
continue to be produced. However, maintaining records and performing the research
responsibilities will now vest with the agency from whose account the warrant
was drawn.
To ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities to agency personnel, the
Bureau of Unclaimed Property and the Bureau of Accounting have scheduled training
sessions for agency accounting and/or administrative support staff as announced
in Agency Addressed (No.10, 2001-02) dated February 20, 2002.
Please provide the Bureau of Unclaimed Property with the name, address and
telephone number of your designated agency representative.
