Safety Coordinator FAQ's

I’m a new safety coordinator.  What do I need to do to get started?  You can login to the SC Toolbox to access the Safety Coordinator’s Manual. This manual is a great comprehensive guide to understanding the safety process.  You will need the username and password to access the manual.  If you need the username and password or have questions, you can contact us at State Loss Prevention Program.

Who is allowed to access the SC Toolbox?  Only safety coordinators and alternates of the State of Florida are allowed to access the SC Toolbox.  We have been granted special permission by professional periodicals to use and distribute safety related information and having a password protected site keeps us from violating copy write laws. If you need the username and password or have questions, you can contact us at State Loss Prevention Program.

Who do I contact regarding a workers’ compensation claim?  If you are a state employee, you should report your injury to your supervisor so they can contact OptaComp.  If you are not a state employee, you probably need to contact the Division of Workers’ Compensation at 850-413-1601.

What is the Safety Awareness Campaign?   Within F.S.284.50(1)(d), The State Loss Prevention Program is given authority to establish a program to promote increased safety awareness among the State’s employees. The Safety Awareness Campaign is designed to recognize an individual agency’s efforts in increasing safety within the past Fiscal Year. There are five categories of awards:  Safety Program of the Year, Best Safety Training Program, Best Safety Awareness Event, Best Safety Awareness Campaign and Most Creative. The Awards are judged by three independent safety experts.

What is the Governor’s Annual Report?   Pursuant to F.S.284.50(3), the State Loss Prevention program in the Division of Risk Management provides an Annual Report for the Governor’s Office on the current state of loss prevention within the Interagency Advisory Council on Loss Prevention (see F.S.284.50(3) and this link for a description of the IAC Council).  The report is due to the Governor by January 15th.

What do I need to check out a safety video?  Are there other safety video resources?  In order to use a video from our library, you will need to complete the Video Loan Request Application.  Once complete, just fax the form to us using the number at the bottom of the form.  The form is on our secure site so you will need the Username and Password to access it.  If you need the username and password or have questions, you can contact us as State Loss Prevention Program.

Another resource available is the University of South Florida’s safety video library.  They have quite a large library for use by private business, public sector and state agencies.

What is the Interagency Advisory Council on Loss Prevention (IACLP) and its purpose? The State Loss Prevention Program is responsible for coordinating the state’s Interagency Advisory Council (IAC) on Loss Prevention. The IAC is comprised of 38 members from the various state agencies and legislative entities.  Each of the member agencies appoints a Safety Coordinator and Alternate Safety Coordinator for their respective entities.  It is the responsibility of the Safety Coordinator to manage their agency’s safety programs, loss control, claims experience and exposures.  It is the responsibility of the State Loss Prevention Program to provide all possible resources to help the Safety Coordinators attain their objectives.  The IAC meets at least quarterly to discuss safety problems with state government, attempts to find solutions for safety problems and assists in the implementation of solutions.

I’m doing research for a safety program.  Do you have any resources?  Our website has two areas of resources which you can access when researching a safety program.  Both are on our secure SC Toolbox site.  Once you access the site, click on Safety Training under the Quick Launch toolbar for written PowerPoint presentations covering all types of safety subjects.  The other resource we have is Safety Website References, also under the Quick Launch toolbar.  It is a source of many different safety websites collected over the years while we are researching safety programs.

I have a Safety/Alternate Coordinator change for my agency, is there a form I need to complete?  Yes, you will need to fill out the Safety Coordinators Appointment Form (DFS-DO-858) in accordance with Section 284.50 (1), F.S. and have your agency head sign and return it to Loss Prevention.  You can access this form on the Internet at our SC Toolbox.  If you need the username and password or have questions, you can contact us as State Loss Prevention Program.
