Effective on Tuesday, September 30, 2008, at 11:59 p.m., MD Medicare
Choice, Inc. (“MDMC”) was ordered into receivership for purposes of
liquidation by the Second Judicial Circuit Court in Leon County,
Florida. The Florida Department of Financial Services is the court
appointed Receiver of MDMC.
MDMC was a health maintenance organization that obtained its Florida
license in February 2005 and began operations in January 2006.
Headquartered in Tampa, Florida, the Medicare only HMO provides health
care coverage to approximately 16,000 Medicare beneficiaries in 23
counties. Medicare
premiums and contracts are administered through a federal agency, the
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”).
MDMC was ordered liquidated effective 11:59 p.m. on September 30,
2008. The MDMC members’ health care coverage with MDMC was cancelled as
of that date and time. As a Medicare beneficiary, however, the former MDMC members
have continued health care coverage through another
health maintenance organization. CMS has arranged for Humana, Inc. to
provide health care coverage to the former members of MDMC from October
1, 2008, going forward. Humana will mail letters to each Medicare
beneficiary explaining how the continued health care coverage with the
HMO will work and the beneficiary’s other Medicare options.
Beneficiaries are urged to carefully read any letters they receive from
Humana or CMS.
