Dear Fellow Floridian:

Did you know that tax identity theft is the most common form of identity theft? In 2012, nearly half of all identity theft complaints reported to the Federal Trade Commission involved tax identity theft. Next Monday is the kickoff of the Federal Trade Commission’s Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week, and with the height of tax season approaching, there is no better time than now to make sure you are prepared with tips and information on how to protect yourself from identity thieves.Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week

Tax identity theft occurs when an individual files a phony tax return using someone else’s personal information, such as a Social Security number, to receive a tax refund. To avoid becoming a victim of tax identity theft, consider the following tips:

  • First, make sure to always protect your Social Security number and personal information.
  • Shred old copies of your tax return and any documents with private information.
  • If possible, file your tax return early in the season to receive your refund before identity thieves have the chance.
  • Make sure to use a secure internet connection if filing your tax return electronically or mail your tax return directly from the post office.
  • It is also recommended that you check your credit report at least once a year for free at www.annualcreditreport.com to make sure no accounts have been opened in your name.

A tax identity theft victim will typically first find out about the crime when they receive a letter from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) stating that more than one tax return was filed under their name. If you receive a letter like this or feel that your Social Security number has been compromised, contact the IRS ID Theft Protection Specialized Unit at 1-800-908-4490.

Identity theft is a financially devastating event. It is also very time-consuming for the victim to repair the damage done by the scammer. It is important to stay vigilant in protecting your identity, personal information and hard-earned money from these identity thieves.
