CFO Sink presents Cabinet resolution to the Special Investigations Unit of the Florida Municipal Insurance Trust

The Governor and Cabinet recognized the Florida League of Cities as administrator of the Florida Municipal Insurance Trust, in honor of ten years of service to the State of Florida with its Special Investigation Unit. Read the Cabinet Resolution.

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, the Florida League of Cities, as administrator of the Florida Municipal Insurance Trust celebrates the 10th anniversary of its Special Investigation Unit; and

WHEREAS, the Special Investigation Unit was created in early 1999 to help the Florida Municipal Insurance Trust pursue and otherwise minimize fraudulent insurance acts committed against the fund and reduce the cost and amount of insurance fraud—including workers compensation fraud; and

WHEREAS, research shows that Florida’s families pay an additional $1,400 in insurance premiums annually due to fraud and the Florida League of Cities, through its Special Investigation Unit is committed to fighting fraud; and

WHEREAS, the Special Investigation Unit identifies and investigates potential claim abuses and reports suspected fraud to the state’s Division of Insurance Fraud—a division of the Department of Financial Services; and

WHEREAS, the Special Investigation Unit, since its formation, has identified, investigated and reported numerous potential cases of suspected insurance fraud, abuses and non-existent injuries to the Division of Insurance Fraud; and

WHEREAS, this collaboration between the Special Investigation Unit and the Division of Insurance Fraud has led to over 40 arrests; and

WHEREAS, this partnership has also resulted in approximately $4.9 million in savings to Florida Municipal Insurance Trust members and nearly $1.8 million in court ordered restitution; and

WHEREAS, Florida Municipal Insurance Trust members are local governments, and prosecution of fraudulent acts results in premium savings which are funded by local government taxpayers.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Governor and Cabinet of the State of Florida do hereby recognize the

SPECIAL INVESTIGATION UNIT

of the Florida League of Cities and encourage all citizens, city government officials and Floridians to join in recognition of the Special Investigation Unit’s efforts.
