Special CasesSurplus Lines Insurers The standard insurance market may not provide all the insurance coverage consumers need. Standard companies often reject risks that do not meet their underwriting criteria, such as high-risk drivers and antique, high-performance or luxury automobiles. Surplus lines insurers fill an essential need for consumers who cannot purchase coverage from standard companies. Your insurance agent must apply for and receive rejections from at least three licensed insurers before turning to a surplus lines insurer. Surplus lines insurers can respond to the unmet needs of consumers due to freedom from some regulation. The Department of Financial Services does not issue these insurers licenses to offer insurance in Florida. Therefore, the Florida Insurance Guaranty Association does not cover surplus lines companies. If the company fails, you have no guarantee of reimbursement. The Department of Financial Services does not regulate the rates these companies charge or the policy forms they use. For this reason, you should thoroughly read a surplus lines policy before you enter into a contract. These policies frequently involve differences in coverage and deductibles not found on other policies. For information on surplus lines insurance policies or to find a surplus lines insurance agent, go to the Florida Surplus Lines Service Office Web site at www.fslso.com. Rental Vehicles You can purchase extra insurance for a rental car when you rent a vehicle. However, if you have coverage on a personal auto, it may extend to the rental vehicle as the primary coverage. Check your policy to determine if your rental vehicle is covered. College Students Florida residents who attend college in another state but use a motor vehicle registered in Florida must carry PIP and PDL coverage on the vehicle. The state where the student attends school may also mandate additional automobile insurance requirements. Working Vehicles: Pizza Delivery Drivers, Salespeople, etc. If you use your personal car for a commercial or business purpose, even for part-time pizza deliveries, your insurance company may not pay your claim if you are involved in an accident. Check with your insurance agent to learn the specific limitations of your policy. |
