When it comes to hurricanes and tropical storms, Floridians have learned first hand that it pays to be prepared. To help you be better prepared, we have posted information on this site designed to help you lessen the impact of a major storm or hurricane.  Whenever a tropical storm or hurricane takes aim at our state, Florida's Chief Financial Officer activates a special consumer helpline through which you can seek assistance on any insurance matter. The number is 1-800-22-STORM, or 1-800-227-8676. Hearing-impaired residents may use a TDD to call 1-800-640-0886.

Hurricanes can cause severe damage.  Before a hurricane hits, you should take steps to protect your property and lessen damages from hurricanes.  The Department of Financial Services has a Natural Disaster guide to help you prepare for disasters.  It also has useful information on handling claims and obtaining help. Flooding is a major cause of damage after a storm and insureds can file a flood claim under the National Flood Insurance Program.

If you have a problem with a claim, you can file a request for assistance online with the Florida Department of Financial Services and, you can look up licensing information on insurance agents and adjusters.  Our web site also has information for individuals wishing to be emergency adjusters.

The Department of Financial Services has compiled a list of links that provide useful weather and disaster information.  The Florida Division of Emergency Management tracks storms and provides information on the status of Florida shelters and evacuation routes.   They also provide information for family preparedness during Hurricane Season and staff the State of Florida Emergency Operations Center.

For up-to-date information on the latest storm, you may wish to visit the National Hurricane Center's Tropical Prediction Center or the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). At FEMA's site you'll find information on:

Again, if you are having a claim-related problem and need assistance from the Florida Department of Financial Services, you may call toll free 1-800-22-STORM. Hearing-impaired Florida residents may receive assistance by using a TDD to call 1-800-640-0886.
