This exciting training opportunity is free. Seniors are encouraged to join the Senior Academy learning series which will be spread out over several weeks. Presentations will occur on Monday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m., starting October 19, 2009 through November 23, 2009. Those who participate in these outreach events will learn important information that can help seniors. CFO Alex Sink's representatives will talk about financial literacy during a presentation called "Safeguard Our Seniors" that will occur during the academy segment scheduled on November 23, 2009 from 1:45 to 2:30 p.m.

This event is for seniors to enroll in Medicare Part "D" during the open enrollment period from November - December 2009. The Area Agency on Aging for SW Fla. (SHINE) will be availible to talk about Medicare Part "D" and help seniors enroll in a program that suits their needs. This event will last from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
The Health Fair will offer free blood pressure checks, balance tests, hearing, vision, and the Step Wise program will educate attendeed on how to avoid falls.
The Long Term Care Ombudsman will also be availible from the Department of Elder Affairs.

Every day, hundreds of Floridians fall victim to financial fraud. Many of these victims are trusting seniors who were misled into making risky or inappropriate financial investments by unscrupulous agents and scam artists, including annuities and reverse mortgages.
"The number of complaints from Florida seniors about annuities has nearly quadrupled in the last three years,” said CFO Alex Sink, whose department has opened 474 investigations on financial fraud involving seniors, with 70 percent of cases related to annuity and life insurance transactions.
“Better financial protections for our growing population of senior residents and tougher consequences for those who defraud our seniors demand our immediate attention,” said CFO Sink.
In response to this trend, DFS will be holding a Safeguard Our Seniors presentation to assist seniors with identifying financial fraud and the warning signs.
