To help seniors be aware of these practices, Florida Chief Financial Office Alex Sink launched the Safeguard Our Senior initiative to educate seniors, caregivers, senior advocates and other citizens of Florida on services available to help them to avoid insurance and financial fraud.   
This SOS event is an opportunity for seniors and their care givers to learn how to guard against fraud and scams targeting seniors.

Every day, hundreds of Floridians fall victim to financial fraud.  Many of these are trusting seniors who are talked into risky or inappropriate investments by unscrupulous agents and scam artists. 
 
In an effort to help our senior citizens avoid becoming  a victim, the Florida Department of Financial Services will offer a Safeguard Our Seniors presentation to the residents of Emeritus. 
 
Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink initiated this program in response to a high number of complaints from our seniors pertaining to annuity abuse.  The program will discuss what seniors need to be aware of in order to make informed decisions concerning their annuity sale or purchase.
 
The presentation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

  Empowerment Symposium
  E. Pat Larkins Community Center

The free Empowerment Symposium will have two sessions of informative speakers with important consumer information relating to senior issues and small businesses.  In addition, the Florida Department of Financial Services will conduct free searches throughout the day, to see if attendees have Unclaimed Money being held by the State of Florida.
 
A light lunch will also be served to attendees only from noon to 12:45 p.m.; with bottled water and juice available throughout the day.
 
Session One from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. will feature several speakers, including Florida's Insurance Consumer Advocate Sean Shaw.  In addition, information about how to Safeguard Our Seniors will be presented by the Florida Department of Financial Services.  Other agencies include Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and Area Agency on Aging.
 
Session Two from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. will feature information about housing, jobs, and small businesses as related to the American Resources & Recovery Act (Stimulus Dollars). 
 
Numerous community resources will have tables set up for consumers to learn more about services that may be available.

  Senior Citizens Academy

The Senior citizens academy is a series of weekly presentations encompassing several weeks.  Palm Beach County Division of Senior Services along with the Town of Jupiter will be conducting its second Senior Academy starting February 22, 2010. 
 
This Academy will acquaint seniors’ in the community with the various services provided within Palm Beach County as well as inform and educate them on pertinent issues, areas that affect them.  
 
Pre-registration is required and this segment is the last in this planned series.  The presentation from the Florida Department of Financial Services about how to Safeguard Our Seniors from becoming victimized by financial fraud, is scheduled from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Questions are encouraged from the audience.
